REVIT FAMILY DILEMMA: TO EXTRUDE OR TO SWEEP? THAT IS THE QUESTION…

2021-07-07

Let’s keep this short and sweet: an extruded solid doesn’t play well when it needs to be rotated based on a certain angular parameter.

Lines, however, are more ideal within a parametric angular family (Ex: an elbow fitting, a tee fitting…) as they can be controlled to adapt to angular parametric variations.

Revit Tee Fitting

So, if your solid is an extruded one and needs to be rotated with respect to a certain axis and follow a certain angular parameter, just create a line and constrain it based on that angle (time to dig those trigonometric formulas up!), and just sweep your profile over that line.

Otherwise, it’s better to keep it simple and just extrude the profile.
